chaos and disorder

A phenomenon called “MEDIA”

Following is a post which wrote for the MAM movis blog:

Media for social change…

This is our motto…It is a hard job…more complicated that it appears…

For many of us…picking up a newspaper, watching a news channel may just be a timpass, but ask the people in it. Media is known for the most infamous things — politics, strange working hours, demanding, deadlines etc.

But is media losing its credibility?A certain gentleman called Noam Chomsky talked about the dichotomy of the media. In other words, how the media is suppose to perform a social function, BUT, there is always a big but, this feature gets over ridden by the fact that media is ultimately a commercial enterprise. It needs to make profits, earn money so that it can continue to run this business. It cannot run in loss, at the expense of delivering the truth. In Media-truth, morals, ethics can stand on the opposite side of profit, selling and capital.

You may be wondering. why is this lunatic person writing blogging about Noam Chomsky and what the heck he said. I did not know about Mr. Chomsky for the first 21 years and 5 months of my life, then I had this amazing subject called ” Journalism and Public Opinion”. From that semester onwards, I look at everything from a different perspective. Just do not believe in everything as written/shown/ heard.

And why is all this important? Well, it is high time we realise that primary media ( newspapers, television, radio, films) is gaining more and more popularity. It is LOUD, INFLUENTIAL, HUGE AND GROUNDBREAKING All these virtues are amazing, but only if used in the right way. Our nation is suffering with internal problems. If the first war of independence in 1857 ( earlier known as a mere sepoy mutiny, thanks to the colonial hangover) was a revolution. Then today we have a tougher task ahead. We need to pick the parasites out who thrive on our cultural, social, economic, political system. Killing the malady among us is far more difficult than driving a colonial power away.

All Media, all of it, needs to get a social perspective. It is happening, slowly and hopefully steadily. In recent past, causes have been highlighted, people have gotten justice. But it still lacks that one common social interest.

The media’s social responsibility is too scattered and lacks unity. Corporates and MNCs will always try and buy us. Thats their job. Media has one too.It has a dual role. To run the enterprise and be social responsible.

The former always meets its demands. But what about the latter?

Hopefully some day we would not need a motto ” Media for social change” just for organisations like MAM. Some day all media will take up this role deligently.

And that ’s the day our media will actually be a positive, people’s media

the bro and sis story continued…

Today was a big day in their life. Li was heading to Yangoon where he would join a revolution just like his father, he knew there is a high risk involved. But it is now or never. It is not about honour, sacrifice. It is about him. All revolutions are personal, but when many personal emotional lives intertwine, it becomes more than  personal, thats when it is a REVOLUTION is a real sense. One person can take it, two can, even three can, but when it happens to almost a nation. They CAN’T.

Kim on the other hand, has the same mission, but with different mode of execution. She is going to use force against force. Her eyes dream of her father getting shot by the state officials, and she cannot take it anymore. She believes in eye for an eye.

For the last time they look at the paddy fields outside their window.

Both leave…

Unaware of each other’s missions…

The daily news flashes the following headlines:

GIRL GETS KILLED IN ATTEMPT TO SAVE A  DEMONSTRATOR: The military opened fire on the group of demostrators, a girl obstructed this fire, getting killed in the process. Later, on examination of the body, she was found to be loaded with explosives along a picture of the deputy military perosnnel.

Sorry for the break in the story…

I need to put this down…I am probably going to go overboard with this…but hey its worth it!

So I stayed in Durban, South Africa for a year. March 2004-March 2005. In that one eyar,I learnt about a whole new culture, an entire continent. I won’t say I know all about it. But I did get a sneak peak into their culture. It was an amazing experience. Somthing which will remain close to my heart.

3 days back, I get a facebook update…a friend from Durban is in town! wooohooo!!!!! My happiness knew no bounds. I was ecstatic! He left his number and I called him back immediately and met yesterday!

It was simply amazing! I couldn’t believe it he was here. We met at campus at Durban. Used to talk a lot on Indian culture and the two countries. He is a South African Indian, hence we had a lot to talk about.

What was unbelievable was we picked up our friendship exactly where we left it!! There was no wierdness, no awkwardness…nothing at all…just pure happiness to see each other after almost 3 years! ( I told you I was going to get overboard with this)

I took him to Bandra, showed him our “beachfront”.He wanted to touch the Arabian sea. Made him wear a kurta:p and finally, took him by a Mumbai local! A mumbai experience is incomplete without commuting in the  aamchi local!

Due to some incidents which are too long to type…we named ourselves…the adventures of Bravery and Stupidity. Obviously I took Bravery before he could…hehe…

Hey bud, if you read this post…Hope to see you soon…cheers!

I am blogging again…finally!

and yes I have changed my address…everything remains the same though…

I have something personal to share ( what the heck blogs are personal!)

The NiD experience
its a story which I wrote for an entrance paper…short story, was suppose to be of 300 words but I am sure I crossed the word limit anyway.
It was quite a morning. The thane-vt journey turned out to be a bummer. The fast train was slower then the slow train. Took almost an hr! ( a fast train between thane-vt takes not more than 40 mins)
I came across strange people at JJ college of commercial and applied arts. All eager students trying to get a place in the National Institute Of Design (NID) .
Amidst nervous faces, I over heard conversations like ” yeah, you must know how to sketch this”, or ” I took sketching classes especially for this test”.
Whoa people! Hold it there! Sketching??? Drawing??? I did not do that since 7th grade…!
I was aware that a design institute will require such skills, but I was already feeling a little out of place.
But that was nothing, till I got the question paper…
Find the most unique feature of this object and DRAW it in 3 angles, do not draw the entire object…
WHAT???
one angle was so difficult…I struggled…dude its not easy… to sketch things when you haven’t done anything on those lines for years now.
anyway, the first paper was common to all disciplines…in every Q I had to DRAW.
The 2nd question paper was fun.
We were asked to write a story on a ritual, a personality or a political situation that we are aware of. The story should consist of minimum 2 characters.
Here was my story:
The morning sun touched his face.
Li looked outside the window, the sun rays has converted the paddy fields into a soft tone of gold and brown. He couldn’t take his eyes off from it, for more than a minute. Soon he woke his sister up. Kim got up instantly, as though she was waiting to wake up. The jump start took Li by surprise, but he did not pay much attention to it.
Li and Kim had spent many such mornings, staring at the mesmerising Burmese landscape. It was Home. A place where they were born, grown up, played together, learnt about life together. But life always hadn’t been so easy. Their beloved father was shot by the dictatorship regime in ‘88. They were only a few days old then. Their father was joining students in a peaceful protest against the dictators. But the military opened fire on unarmed protestors. Their father died instantly.
Twenty Years has passed, twenty years of hope, twenty years of tears, twenty years of order, twenty years of shattered dreams.
It was time again. Time to stand up, to get noticed. Li was going to leave for Yangoon in an hour to join the protestors. He got ready, and was about to leave, when Kim hugged him. It was a tight hug. Both of them had tears in their eyes….
